Why Do You Feel Sleepy After Eating? 4 Reasons Behind Post-Meal Lethargy

Image: ABP Live

People often feel sleepy after eating. Some people don't feel like working, while others find their attention constantly wandering and their bodies yearning for a break. This problem is especially acute after lunch. This raises the question: why does the body feel lethargic after a full meal? Let's understand why drowsiness occurs after eating and what to do to avoid it.

Eating Too Much Food Can Increase Lethargy

When we eat more than we need, our stomach has to work harder to digest it. A heavy meal can make us feel full and sluggish. Some people feel especially lethargic after eating foods high in oil, ghee, and carbohydrates. In such a situation, it's better to eat a balanced diet rather than eating too much at one time. Including pulses, vegetables, whole grains, and protein-rich foods in your diet provides the body with essential nutrients.

Body Clock Is Also A Reason For This

Feeling lethargic after eating isn't just related to the food itself, but also to the body's body clock. Our bodies operate in a consistent rhythm throughout the day. This is why many people naturally feel sleepy in the afternoon. If you haven't gotten enough sleep the night before, this feeling of drowsiness after eating can be exacerbated. Therefore, it's important to get adequate sleep daily and maintain a consistent sleep-wake schedule.

Blood Sugar And Hormones Also Have An Effect

After eating, the body digests food to obtain energy. Blood sugar and insulin levels change during this process. Carbohydrates in food help provide energy, but eating too many sugary or refined carbohydrates can leave some people feeling tired afterward. Furthermore, certain changes occur in the body after a meal that affect signals related to sleep and rest.

What To Do To Avoid Lethargy?

To reduce drowsiness after meals, maintain a balanced diet and avoid excessive fried or sugary foods. Take a light walk for 10 to 15 minutes after meals. Instead of lying down immediately after a meal, engage in some normal activity. Also, get a good night's sleep and drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you experience excessive sleepiness, persistent fatigue, or dizziness after each meal, consult a doctor.
