West Bengal: An Indian Muslim truck driver was asked if he was a Bangladeshi when he requested the toll plaza employee to speak in Bengali. The incident occurred on October 26 at the Shibpur toll plaza on National Highway 12.

Rafikul Khan from Narayanpur was transporting bananas from Karimpur towards Siliguri. His truck reached the toll plaza located in Murshidabad district and stopped to pay the toll.

When Khan spoke to the employee in Bengali, the latter allegedly asked, “Are you from outside India? Are you Bangladeshi? Are you a Bangladeshi that I should speak in Bangla?”

An enraged Khan snapped back, asking why he should speak in Hindi. “Tum kaun hothe ho? Tu Hindi se kaiko baat kar raha idhar pe? West Bengal mein? Saala Bangladeshi bolta hai saala! (“Who do you think you are? Why are you speaking Hindi here in West Bengal?”),” Khan says telling the toll plaza employee to report.

“Ami Katai diye jabo. Katai tulbo. Amar gari ekhane adh ghenta dhori daariye ache, thik ache? Ami bole dilam, toll tol, ami Katai jachi,” Kha says in Bengali.

which loosely translates to: Yes, I’ll go through Katai. I’ll lift the Katai. My vehicle has been standing here for half an hour, okay? I’ve already told you, toll or no toll, I’m going to Katai.
