Nearly killed: Andrey X recounts Israeli attack in West Bank

Social media influencer Andrey Khrzhanovskiy, known as Andrey X, has recounted an attack by Israeli settlers in Umm al-Khair, in the Masafer Yatta area of the occupied West Bank, which took place overnight on Wednesday, October 28.

In a video posted on Sunday, November 1, Khrzhanovskiy said he and fellow activists were nearly killed after confronting settlers who had locked a gate, trapping families from more than 20 Palestinian communities inside their homes.

“We were nearly killed two days ago because we caught settlers locking the gate to 20 Palestinian communities, trapping entire families,” he said.

He identified one of the alleged attackers as Tomer Liani, accusing him of stealing his phone, repeatedly punching him and slamming his head against the ground until he began losing consciousness.

Khrzhanovskiy said two other settlers, Nevo Nadalski and Shimon Atia, arrived carrying M16 rifles and prevented fellow activist Jasper from helping him. He added that Liani and another individual assaulted Jasper, while activist Adele Shoko sustained a wrist injury.

Khrzhanovskiy alleged that Israeli army personnel and police prevented ambulances from reaching the scene and blocked Palestinian paramedics from treating him. He said an Israeli ambulance drove about 100 metres before he was transferred, barely conscious, into a police vehicle instead of being taken to hospital.

Jasper was arrested after demanding that ambulances be allowed through, according to Khrzhanovskiy.

He said Israeli police detained both activists for more than 24 hours. Jasper was interrogated for seven hours, while Khrzhanovskiy was questioned for three hours after they were kept awake throughout the night.

He further alleged that authorities barred him from entering the occupied West Bank until next year and confiscated Jasper’s phone.

This comes two days after Khrzhanovskiy confirmed his release, saying he had sustained a concussion and was exhausted.

I am alive and free.

Settlers tried to kill us because we caught them locking several Palestinian communities from leaving their homes – very illegally, even by Israeli occupation's laws.

I'm concussed and very tired, so I'll tell the story tomorrow.

Activist Adele Shoko describes settler assault

Shoko, who was also present, described the incident in posts on X on October 29.

“They beat us, threatened to shoot us, stole Andrey’s phone and my glasses and pepper-sprayed Jasper,” he wrote.

He also said Khrzhanovskiy had lost consciousness several times in front of Israeli police and was not taken to hospital.

Shoko added that he and Jasper had been beaten, while Jasper was pepper-sprayed and arrested.

CPJ condemns detention of journalists

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the detention of Khrzhanovskiy and US journalist Jasper Nathaniel by Israeli forces near Umm al-Khair on October 29.

“Israeli authorities can’t claim to protect public safety while detaining journalists who have been attacked in the course of their work and failing to hold those responsible for the violence accountable,” CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah said.

She criticised the authorities for keeping journalists in custody without clearly disclosing the legal grounds for their detention, particularly when they might still require medical attention.

Qudah said such actions compounded the harm and sent a dangerous message that journalists documenting settler violence could themselves become targets of the authorities.
