Mumbai Inorbit Mall’s prayer room ‘demolished’ after viral video

Mumbai: A prayer room in Mumbai’s Inorbit Mall was allegedly shut down and demolished after Hindutva groups opposed it, calling it a secret “Allah ka ghar” in a place where people from all religions visit.

The issue stemmed from a viral video of two girls in hijabs showing around the namaz room at the mall, encouraging people not to skip their prayers.

The two minors explained that the room is well-furnished with separate women’s and men’s sections, including a wuzu khana.

The video, however, received backlash from right-wing individuals and groups who said it was an attempt at “converting” Mumbai into a “soft Islamic enclave” or Pakistan under the guise of secularism.

Hindutva umbrella outfit Sakal Hindu Samaj posted the video on October 30 on X and said, “Is Mumbai on the path to becoming Pakistan? This is a matter of serious concern for every Mumbaikar! At Inorbit Mall in Malad, Mumbai, separate spaces—essentially mosques or dedicated rooms—have been set up for offering Namaz. People from all religions and communities visit this mall.

But the question arises: in this very mall—situated on the land of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj—can a Hindu perform acts of worship or prayer? The answer is—no!”

Stating that a mall is a public place visited by people of all religions, Sakal Hindu Samaj protested at the site and called for its demolition.

The following day, on October 31, the group shared the same video showing a “before and after” of the condition of the prayer room. In one clip, the prayer room was seen demolished with its tiles broken.

A mall is a public place visited by people of all religions.

However, a secret mosque had been constructed for one particular religion inside Mumbai's Inorbit Mall in Malad.

Following protests by the Hindu community, the structure was demolished.

Siasat.com could not independently verify the authenticity of the demolition video. Attempts to contact the local police and the mall were also unanswered.

While uncommon, prayer rooms in Indian shopping centers are not a recent development. Malls frequently provide these multi-faith spaces to accommodate prayers without restricting access to any specific religion.
