Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited film King is already making big money even before reaching theatres. With the superstar returning to the big screen this Christmas alongside daughter Suhana Khan, the film has generated massive buzz. Adding to the excitement, the action thriller has reportedly earned Rs 665 crore through its pre-release business.

King pre-release business

According to a report by Pinkvilla, King has secured several big deals across theatrical distribution, OTT, satellite and music rights.

Pen Marudhar has reportedly acquired the Indian distribution rights for Rs 250 crore, while Phars Films has bagged the overseas rights for a minimum guarantee of Rs 175 crore. Netflix has reportedly purchased the digital streaming rights for Rs 150 crore. The satellite and music rights have fetched Rs 25 crore and Rs 65 crore, respectively.

Together, these deals take the film’s reported pre-release business to Rs 665 crore. However, the Netflix deal reportedly includes a clause linked to the film’s theatrical performance, which could affect the final amount.

Budget

While the pre-release numbers look impressive, King also comes with a massive budget. The film reportedly started with a production cost of Rs 300 crore, but the amount has now increased to nearly Rs 400 crore.

Red Chillies Entertainment is also reportedly spending around Rs 50 crore on promotions and marketing. Including Shah Rukh Khan’s notional fee, the overall cost is estimated to be around Rs 550 crore.

This means the film has a substantial recovery target, with its estimated break-even figure standing at around Rs 550 crore. Its actual profitability, however, will depend on theatrical collections, distribution shares and other revenue arrangements.

King cast and release date

Directed by Siddharth Anand and co-written by Sujoy Ghosh, King is an action thriller featuring Shah Rukh Khan as an international assassin. The film marks Suhana Khan’s theatrical debut, with the actress playing his protégé.

The star-studded cast also includes Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghav Juyal and Abhay Verma.

With such massive pre-release business and expectations riding high, all eyes are now on King and its box-office performance this Christmas.
