Khammam: Cyclone Murasu has wreaked havoc in erstwhile Khammam district with several mandals receiving extremely heavy rainfall in the past 24-hours and transportation to many villages was cut off due to overflowing streams on Wednesday.

Mulakalapalli and Dammapet in Kothagudem witnessed an extreme rainfall of 23.1cm and 21.4 cm respectively while in Khammam Sathupalli recorded an extreme rainfall of 21.8 cm. Vemsoor, Julurupad, Penuballi, Aswaraopet, Bhadrachalam, Chunchupally, Madhira, Enkoor, Tallada, Burgampad, Paloncha and Kothagudem received very heavy rainfall.

The cyclonic rains accompanied by strong wings damaged standing crops like paddy, cotton and chilli while dampening harvested produce in many mandals. Coal production in SCCL’s opencast mines at Kothagudem, Sathupalli and Manuguru was affected.

A temporary approach road constructed next to a bridge across Pamuleru stream that collapsed on the outskirts of Rajupeta recently was washed away by the floodwaters. As a result, vehicular movement Mulakalapalli–Dammapet National Highway has come to a standstill.
