UP Political News: Akhilesh Yadav Says He Won't Contest 2027 Polls, BJP Calls Him 'Rancho'

Uttar Pradesh's political temperature has risen after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav announced that he would not contest the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections. Akhilesh said he would follow a similar political path as before and take the oath as Chief Minister while continuing as a Lok Sabha MP, if his party comes to power. His statement has triggered a sharp exchange between the Samajwadi Party and the BJP. Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary launched an attack on Akhilesh, calling him “Rancho” and accusing him of backing away from the electoral challenge after making big claims. In a social media post, Chaudhary also questioned whether Akhilesh expected to become Chief Minister directly from the Lok Sabha. He further referred to the earlier controversy surrounding Akhilesh's visits to Noida during his tenure as Chief Minister. Akhilesh responded sharply on X, invoking Lord Krishna's name ‘Ranchhod’ and criticising Chaudhary's understanding of its significance. The exchange has added a religious and political dimension to the growing debate over Akhilesh's decision. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also criticised the Samajwadi Party, claiming that it had lost public confidence, while defending the BJP's governance and development record. Union Minister BL Verma dismissed Akhilesh's remarks as an individual decision and said political success cannot be determined by superstitions or such beliefs. Political observers have also pointed out that several Uttar Pradesh Chief Ministers in the past have taken office without contesting an Assembly election at that time, although constitutional rules require a minister who is not a member of either House of the state legislature to become a member within six months. With the 2027 elections approaching, the question is whether Akhilesh's announcement will become a major political issue for the BJP or remain a personal electoral strategy.
