Alwal Rythu Bazaar: Farmers urge Eatala to protect livelihoods

Hyderabad: Farmers have urged Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender to protect Alwal Rythu Bazaar, warning that its removal for the construction of an elevated corridor could affect the livelihoods of around 1,500 farming families.
A group of farmers met the MP and submitted a representation, requesting him to intervene and ensure that they are not left without a place to sell their produce.
Farmers from villages in Medchal, Siddipet, Medak and Nalgonda districts bring vegetables to the Alwal market. They said around 1,000 to 1,500 farmers from different areas visit the market every day to sell their produce.
Alwal Rythu Bazaar has supported farmers for 26 years
The farmers said the market has been serving as a source of livelihood since January 26, 1999. For nearly 26 years, it has helped them sell vegetables directly to consumers without depending on middlemen.
They also pointed out that this system allows farmers to offer vegetables at lower prices to customers.
With the market facing removal for the proposed elevated corridor, farmers have expressed concern over the impact on their income.
They requested Eatala Rajender to arrange an alternative site in the Alwal surrounding areas if the existing market has to be removed. They said providing another location would help protect the livelihoods of the farmers who depend on the bazaar.
