New Delhi: The teaching and non-teaching staff and students of the Hindu College of the University of Delhi, protesting for over a month now, had TRS founder and president K Kavitha join them on Wednesday, November 4.

She extended her solidarity with the protesting students and their fight to preserve the institution’s historic legacy and academic identity.

Addressing the students, Kavitha said, “For 127–130 years, Hindu College has stood as a symbol of excellence. We have a responsibility to preserve its history and legacy. You cannot be a dictator and rule the college. You may fund the institution, but you cannot brand the institution.”

Delhi: Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) chief K. Kavitha says, "I have come here from Hyderabad to attend the protest by the students, lecturers and non-teaching staff of Hindu College because it is a very prestigious institution. Questioning the silence of the authorities, she said, “The students are sitting on a justified and democratic dharna. Why are the authorities not taking note of their concerns? We are operating within the legal framework. Those responsible must be questioned and asked to answer.”

The TRS chief called upon the UGC and the Centre to address the concerns raised by the students, ensure accountability, and protect the institutional autonomy and heritage of Hindu College.

“The protest will move from the campus to the streets if the students’ voices continue to be ignored. I have always stood up for what is right, and we are all together in this fight,” she warned.

What the protest is about

According to reports, the Hindu College Staff Association (HCSA) has been protesting against the college administration over alleged irregularities in admissions, financial matters and governance.

However, a major concern that Kavithaa also addressed involves the alleged commercial use of college resources. The HCSA has claimed that buildings were being taken over and renamed after corporate donors, including the Chimes Group, Relaxo, and Ultra International. These arrangements violate university rules, it said, seeking an inquiry into them.

The HCSA has asked the University of Delhi to take over the College and form an extended governing body to oversee its functioning. This would protect the institution from an alleged move towards privatisation.
