The GLC 400 4Matic Electric becomes the first locally built Mercedes-Benz based on the MB.EA-M platform, as Pune joins Bremen in its global production network

Mercedes-Benz India has started local production of the all-new Electric GLC at its Chakan facility in Pune, Maharashtra. The first locally assembled unit is the GLC 400 4Matic Electric, which carries an ex-showroom price of Rs. 78.50 lakh across India. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in mid-November 2026, placing the electric SUV at the centre of the company’s next phase of local manufacturing.

The Electric GLC brings two major technology firsts to the Indian production facility. It is the first locally manufactured Mercedes-Benz based on the MB.EA-M electric vehicle architecture and also the first locally built model to use the Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS. The Pune facility is only the second plant globally to manufacture this generation of the Electric GLC, following the company’s factory in Bremen, Germany.

The production milestone was marked in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sunetra Pawar and senior Mercedes-Benz Group executives, including Chairman Ola Källenius and CTO Joerg Burzer. The company says the Electric GLC is assembled on the same flexible production line used for combustion-engine vehicles. This arrangement allows the Pune plant to handle electric and petrol or diesel models on a shared manufacturing line.

Mercedes-Benz India has committed an additional Rs. 200 crore investment in 2026 towards manufacturing operations, new product start up activities and digitisation. Its cumulative investment in India now stands at Rs. 3,200 crore, which the company describes as the highest among luxury carmakers in the country. Mercedes-Benz also says it has sold more than 2.4 lakh vehicles locally, another record figure for a luxury manufacturer in India.

The new model also introduces the MB.OS digital platform to locally manufactured Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The operating system is designed to integrate vehicle functions and digital services, although the Indian press release does not detail the full feature list or equipment specifications of the GLC 400 4Matic Electric. The company positions the model as a combination of its established GLC design and comfort attributes and its newer electric and software technologies.

Mercedes-Benz India is also changing the charging benefit offered to new electric vehicle customers. Instead of a complimentary AC wall box, buyers will receive MB.Charge public charging credits. The company has not specified the credit value or the duration of the benefit in the announcement. This change forms part of the ownership offering alongside the locally manufactured electric SUV.

The start of Electric GLC production gives the Pune facility a more prominent role in Mercedes-Benz’s global electric vehicle manufacturing network. The company has highlighted the plant’s flexible production capability and the contribution of its workforce to the model’s production ramp up.
