Gaza rain floods thousands of tents, 2 injured in wall collapse

Heavy rainfall flooded thousands of tents sheltering displaced Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Saturday, November 7, while two people were injured after a wall of a building damaged by previous Israeli bombardment collapsed in northern Gaza.
The flooding affected several areas, including the Gaza City port, west of Deir al-Balah, north of the Nuseirat refugee camp, Jabalia and Beit Lahia. Rainwater entered makeshift shelters, damaging the belongings of families already struggling with inadequate living conditions.
According to medical sources cited by Anadolu, the two Palestinians were injured when heavy rain caused a weakened wall to collapse. The building had sustained damage during previous Israeli bombardment.
The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that tents in low-lying areas were particularly affected, raising concerns about further flooding as a low-pressure system accompanied by cold air continued to affect the territory.
An estimated 270,000 tents are sheltering displaced families across Gaza. More than 400,000 displaced people are living in locations vulnerable to flooding and rainwater accumulation or close to the seashore.

The latest rainfall has further exposed the inadequacy of temporary shelters, many of which are made from nylon and thin fabric. With limited access to fuel and heating supplies, families are struggling to protect children and elderly relatives from falling temperatures.
Gaza’s Civil Defence had warned on Thursday, November 5, that heavy rain and strong winds expected on Friday could threaten people living in tents and temporary shelters, as well as those occupying buildings damaged by previous attacks.
According to UN figures, nearly 950,000 displaced Palestinians live in areas facing moderate or high flood risks.
The recurring weather emergencies come amid the extensive destruction caused by Israel’s war on Gaza, which began in October 2023. The war has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000, according to figures cited in reports, while leaving much of the territory’s infrastructure severely damaged.
