Hyderabad: Prohibition and Excise officials have uncovered two instances of the alleged illegal sale of defence canteen liquor in Alwal, seizing 163 bottles valued at around Rs 2.11 lakh from two houses.

Investigations have revealed that former defence personnel allegedly obtained liquor through subsidised canteen facilities by utilising their own and other eligible persons’ quotas, while their wives reportedly sold the stock to customers at higher prices.

In the first operation, the sleuths searched a house in Saraswathi Nagar, Lothukunta, belonging to Manyam Nagaprasanna and her husband, Ram Anjaneyulu. The team recovered 96 bottles of defence liquor from the premises.

Officials suspect that Ram Anjaneyulu arranged the liquor through defence canteen quotas and that his wife was involved in its unauthorised sale from their residence. Nagaprasanna was arrested and handed over to the Alwal Excise Station. A case was registered against the couple.

In another operation, a team searched a house in Soujanya Colony, New Bowenpally, and recovered 67 bottles from the residence of Musimi Lenka (39), who was allegedly selling defence liquor illegally. She was arrested and handed over to the local excise police.

The two seizures have prompted officials to examine the suspected diversion of subsidised defence liquor into the local market for commercial gains. Further action is being pursued in both cases.
