Cyberabad plans three rainwater harvesting pits in parks across 76 wards

Hyderabad: Cyberabad civic body has announced plans to build three rainwater harvesting (RWH) pits in every public park under its jurisdiction to revive the Cyberabad city’s depleting water table.

The initiative seeks to turn parks into urban catchment zones, channelling millions of litres of monsoon runoff into the ground instead of losing it to concrete roads and stormwater drains.

CMC commissioner G Srijana said that three rainwater harvesting (RWH) pits would be built in parks in each of civic body’s 76 wards. Addressing the media at CMC head office in Gachibowli, she said Urban Biodiversity wing officials had been directed to prepare templates for the RWH pits.

HMWSSB supplies nearly 1.5 lakh litres of treated water daily to the three civic bodies. CMC is coordinating with the water board to supply treated water through Green Tankers for non-potable use, she said.

CMC ranked first among GHMC and MMC in supplying nearly 90,000 litres of treated water, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. CMC is using its own tankers to supply treated water through 200 daily trips to parks, central medians and greenery beneath flyovers across the Cyberabad civic body area, G Srijana said.

She said the UBD wing had been instructed to build small water sumps at parks with borewell facilities to store water instead of wasting it, as treated water was already being used. She said 337 small-capacity sewerage treatment plants, maintained by resident welfare associations, also supplied treated water.

G Srijana said Cyberabad builders had been instructed to use treated water for construction, warning that violations would invite stern action, including an immediate halt to work.
