Belagavi: Seven people, including the gunman of BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, have been arrested for allegedly attempting to rob a man of Rs 2.68 crore under the pretext of doubling his money in Mudalagi town of Belagavi district. The incident took place on October 30 but came to light only recently.

The arrested have been identified as Chidanand Kurabet, the MLA’s gunman, Sanjeev Arabhavi, Rajaram, Ramesh Malyagol, Prakash, Raghavendra Koppad and Ramappa Talawar. A case has been registered at the Mudalagi police station.

According to the complaint, the victim, Kalmesh, had earlier lost money in an investment scheme run by Shivam Associates. Allegedly taking advantage of his financial loss, Kurabet approached him with an offer to generate higher returns. The accused reportedly promised an additional Rs 30,000 for every Rs 1 lakh invested and assured him that the money would be credited to his bank account.

Trusting the offer, Kalmesh raised Rs 2.68 crore through banks, cooperative societies and friends. He subsequently informed Kurabet that the amount was ready. The accused allegedly asked him to bring the cash to a shed on the pretext of counting it.

When Kalmesh arrived with the money, the gang allegedly attacked the shed, threw chilli powder into the eyes of those present and attempted to take away the cash. However, Kalmesh had arranged for several people to keep watch around the premises. They caught the accused outside the shed and later handed them over to the police.

Police have recovered Rs 2.39 crore from the accused. One more suspect is reportedly absconding, while efforts are under way to trace him and recover the remaining amount.

Following Kurabet’s arrest, Belagavi Superintendent of Police K Ramarajan ordered his suspension from service. The SP said the investigation was under way and clarified that the MLA had no role in the case. He also cautioned people against falling for promises of unusually high returns.
