Bengaluru: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, October 26, staged a protest at Freedom Park in Bengaluru against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding an apology and accusing the Congress leader of violating political decorum.

The demonstration intensified when BJP leaders and workers attempted to march towards Vidhana Soudha. Police personnel blocked their route with barricades, prompting some protesters to try to climb over them.

Protesters shouted slogans against Kharge and demanded that he apologise to the Prime Minister and the people of India. The BJP alleged that the remarks were inappropriate for a leader holding a senior constitutional position in a national political party.

Speaking at the protest, Ashoka attacked Kharge over his choice of words and alleged that the Congress president was resorting to personal criticism. He said the conduct of Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyank Kharge would damage the Congress, and questioned whether such language was acceptable in public life.

Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy also condemned the remarks, describing them as derogatory and a departure from political norms. He alleged that targeting the Prime Minister’s father crossed acceptable boundaries and said Kharge’s seniority should have encouraged greater responsibility in public statements.

Kumaraswamy further accused the Congress president of displaying poor judgement despite his long political career. He termed the comments unacceptable and criticised the Congress over what he described as declining standards of political discourse.

The BJP maintained that criticism of the government should focus on policies and performance rather than personal attacks on political leaders and their families. It reiterated its demand for an apology from Kharge.

The protest and subsequent detention of BJP leaders underscored the escalating political confrontation between the BJP and Congress over the Prime Minister-related remarks.
