Hyderabad: The city is exploring a system to strengthen last-mile connectivity for Metro commuters and ease traffic congestion, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed said on Tuesday, October 27.

A techno-economic feasibility study has been conducted to assess the introduction of the Personal Rapid Transit System in Hyderabad under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, a press release said.

Speaking at a stakeholder workshop held here to gather feedback and suggestions on the study, Ahmed said it was initiated following directions from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to explore innovative and sustainable solutions to address last-mile connectivity challenges around Metro stations and other high-density activity centres.

The workshop was jointly organised by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited and LEA Associates South Asia Pvt Ltd, the consultancy agency engaged for the project.

Ahmed said the proposed PRTS would offer a reliable, comfortable, environment-friendly and technology-driven mobility solution.

It would help increase Metro ridership, reduce dependence on private vehicles and intermediate public transport, and ease road congestion in rapidly growing urban areas, he said.

Feedback was being collected from relevant government and private sector stakeholders, and steps were being taken to advance the project, Ahmed said.

The project is intended to help Metro passengers reach their final destinations seamlessly after travelling on the Metro network, he added.

Advisor to the Telangana government (Urban Transport and Metro) NVS Reddy explained the potential benefits of the project and highlighted how the PRTS could improve connectivity between Metro stations and commuters’ destinations, the release said.
