New Delhi: Underscoring the critical role lakes play in preventing flooding during the monsoon and drought during summers, HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency) Commissioner A V Ranganath said on Tuesday, October 27, that the state government has undertaken restoration of lakes and nalas (stormwater drains) on a large scale.

Participating in a conference on urban flood management organised by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi, Ranganath said that HYDRAA has already developed six lakes by removing encroachments and clearing silt. The second phase, covering another 14 lakes, is underway.

This would be a continuous process in Telangana, he said, appealing to corporates to support this initiative as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

He said that HYDRAA will facilitate the granting of all necessary permissions for the development of these lakes through a single-window system.

Subsequently, Genpact stepped forward to develop the Chinna Cheruvu (small lake) in Ramanthapur, located within the Uppal constituency, at Rs 2 crore.

Meanwhile, a team led by Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary of the MA&UD Department, also met with officials from the NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) and sought the necessary funds to effectively deal with natural disasters.
