Hyderabad: Gandhi Medical College (GMC) on Tuesday, October 27, inaugurated an Emergency Medicine Department (EMD), becoming the first government medical college in Hyderabad to establish it.

It has become the third government medical college in Telangana to open an emergency medicine unit.

NMC requirement

The new department was launched in line with the National Medical Commission (NMC) requirement for medical colleges to have dedicated emergency medicine facilities.

As the department has 45 beds, it is the largest emergency medicine facility among government medical colleges in Telangana.

It aims to provide quick treatment to patients during the golden hour, wherein timely care can improve patients’ chances of recovery after a medical emergency.

Hyderabad’s Gandhi Medical College receives medical equipment

Meanwhile, as part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, enGen Global donated two medical machines worth Rs 8 lakh to the department.

The equipment includes a Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) machine and an Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) machine.

A report in the Times of India quoted Dr N Vani, Director of Medical Education (DME), saying Gandhi Medical College could receive postgraduate seats in Emergency Medicine following a recent inspection by the NMC.
