Hyderabad: The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday, October 28, arrested a Sub-Inspector of Police attached to Banjara Hills police station for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a complainant.

According to ACB officials, the complainant was facing a cheating case registered in 2026. He was also facing two other cheating cases registered in 2024, which are still under investigation.

The SI, identified as Vijay, allegedly initially demanded Rs. 10 lakh from the complainant before producing him for remand, claiming that the amount was meant for both himself and the police inspector. When the complainant expressed his inability to pay the amount and offered only Rs. 10,000, he was taken into custody and produced before a court the following day.

However, the magistrate rejected the remand request, observing that the offence fell within the category of cases punishable with less than seven years of imprisonment, and returned the accused to the police.

The complainant was subsequently called to the police station again on October 13. In connection with one of the older cases, the police had issued him a notice under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure. When he submitted his reply on October 15, the SI allegedly demanded a minimum bribe of Rs 2 lakh to accept it.

The complainant expressed his willingness to pay Rs 1 lakh, but the alleged transaction did not take place as the police personnel reportedly grew suspicious and did not respond further.

Based on the complaint, the ACB registered a case on Wednesday and arrested the SI. Officials are examining the relevant case records to ascertain whether there were any irregularities in the handling of the cheating cases that remain under investigation.

ACB officials said the role, if any, of the police inspector would also be examined. Further investigation is under way, and the SI will be produced before a court for remand, officials said.
