UP MLC Results: BJP Wins 6 Seats, SP Takes 4, Final Varanasi Graduate Count in Focus

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election results have triggered a fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Out of the 11 MLC seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won six seats, while the Samajwadi Party (SP) has secured four victories, with the Varanasi Graduate seat emerging as a key focus during the counting process. The BJP won the Meerut Graduate, Agra Graduate, Lucknow Teacher, Bareilly-Moradabad Teacher, Gorakhpur Teacher and Meerut Teacher seats. The Samajwadi Party registered victories in the Varanasi Teacher, Allahabad-Jhansi Graduate, Lucknow Graduate and Agra Teacher constituencies. The SP's performance has strengthened its claim that the party's PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) strategy is gaining support. Meanwhile, the BJP's tally has remained at six seats, despite expectations within the party that it could win a larger share. The results also sparked a war of words between Samajwadi Party spokesperson Udayveer Singh and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. Singh accused the BJP of double standards, while Maurya targeted Akhilesh Yadav, alleging that the SP chief raises claims of electoral irregularities after losing elections and describes the BJP as weak when his party wins. Akhilesh Yadav shared a message on social media following the results, while Dimple Yadav praised the performance of the five SP candidates, describing their victories as a foundation for change. Speaking about the political implications, the discussion highlighted that MLC elections have a different electorate and voting pattern from Assembly elections. The results therefore cannot directly predict the outcome of the 2027 polls, but they offer both parties an opportunity to assess their strategies, strengthen their support base and prepare for the upcoming political contest in Uttar Pradesh.
