Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday directed the Rangareddy District Magistrate, Future City Commissioner, Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration Department, Rangareddy, to take necessary action and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within four weeks regarding the tragic incident at MVSR Engineering College here.

This direction follows a complaint filed by a law student of University of Delhi, Sabavath Kalyan and advocate Karupothula Revanth concerning the collapse of an overhead metallic lighting truss and its supporting poles during the Sangamam 2026 technical and cultural festival at MVSR Engineering College on October 17.
According to the complaint, the structure collapsed during a Dandiya celebration, resulting in the reported deaths of two female students and injuries to around 12–14 other students. The incident raised serious concerns regarding structural safety, event management, crowd control and emergency preparedness at educational institutions.

The complainants sought NHRC’s intervention, an impartial and time-bound investigation, appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased students and medical assistance for injured students. They also sought accountability wherever negligence is established, and comprehensive safety audits of temporary event structures at educational institutions.
