In a historic global debut, the Bihar Museum in Patna has entered the top ten of the World’s 100 Best Museums 2026 ranking released by Munich-based travel publication Worth a Journey. Ranking first in Asia and ninth globally, it stands as the sole Indian cultural institution featured on the prestigious international list.

The 2026 assessment, which combines worldwide data analysis with on-site evaluations, placed the Patna landmark ahead of world-renowned institutions. Notably, it outranked New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, which placed tenth, as well as Paris’s iconic Louvre Museum, which was ranked 31st. Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antropología claimed the overall top spot.

Spanning over 13 acres on Bailey Road, the state-of-the-art facility was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki in collaboration with Mumbai’s Opolis Architects.

The museum’s world-class recognition stems from its vast collection of artefacts spanning early human civilisations up to 1764, alongside its immersive spatial layout. Among its premier highlights is the Didarganj Yakshi, a life-sized Mauryan sculpture carved from polished Chunar sandstone, widely regarded as the crown jewel of the collection.

Three expansive Historical Art Galleries trace regional history through the Indus Valley Civilisation, the Mauryan Empire under Ashoka, the Gupta Golden Age, and the reign of Sher Shah Suri. Visitors can also view the famous Kurkihar bronzes from the Pala dynasty, Kushan stone carvings, and punch-marked silver coins displayed in visible storage sections.

In addition to ancient antiquities, Bihar Museum features an interactive Children’s Gallery complete with hands-on discovery zones, alongside specialised spaces celebrating Madhubani folk art and the global journey of the Bihari diaspora.

Cultural historians and tourism officials have welcomed the global recognition, citing it as a major boost for heritage preservation and regional tourism infrastructure. The achievement highlights the institution’s role in showcasing India‘s artistic legacy on an international stage.
