EKA Mobility expands manufacturing footprint

Electric mobility firm EKA Mobility has inaugurated six manufacturing facilities across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in a bid to scale production of electric buses, trucks and smaller commercial vehicles as India expands fleet electrification.

The company said the six plants in Pune and Pithampur are part of a 11-facility network spread across 120 acres, with annual capacity for more than 40,000 electric vehicles and investment exceeding Rs 3,500 crore. The facilities cover vehicle assembly, engineering, battery enclosures, seating and interiors.

EKA claims 1,243% year-on-year growth in H1 FY27. It also asserts an order book of more than 11,000 buses.

Founder and Chairman Sudhir Mehta emphasised the importance of affordability and accessibility, saying, “Until we make it accessible and affordable for all, we will not have achieved our vision, and no amount of technology matters if it does not reach the people who depend on it every day.”

Competition, however, is intensifying. VAHAN-based figures show that India registered 2,944 electric buses between January and June 2026, a 40% increase year-on-year. Switch Mobility led with 830 registrations, followed by JBM Auto with 635 and PMI Electro Mobility with 574. Pinnacle Mobility Solutions, the company behind EKA, registered 171, accounting for 5.8% of the market.

Meanwhile, Government policy is supporting this expansion. The PM E-DRIVE scheme, whose outlay increased to Rs 11,900 crore in August 2026, earmarks Rs 4,391 crore for 14,028 electric buses and Rs 500 crore for 5,643 electric trucks. The scheme has been extended for most segments until March 2028.

A separate PM-eBus Sewa payment-security programme supports the deployment of more than 38,000 buses, addressing concerns around delayed payments to operators. The Rs 25,938-crore production-linked incentive programme also seeks to strengthen domestic advanced automotive technology manufacturing.
