'Most dangerous bowler to face in nets' - Rahane praises Mohammed Shami

Mohammed Shami brought his 13-year Test career to a close in November 2026, marking exactly 13 years since his debut in the same month in 2013. The Indian fast bowler represented India across 64 Tests, accumulating 229 wickets from 122 innings at an average of 27.71 runs per wicket and an economy rate of 3.30 runs per over. His best bowling performance was 6/56, and he recorded 12 four-wicket hauls and six five-wicket hauls during his international tenure. Shami's final Test appearance came in March 2025 against New Zealand.
Ajinkya Rahane, the former India batter, has reflected on Shami's exceptional qualities as a bowler and teammate, particularly highlighting his formidable presence during training sessions. Speaking on Sony Sports Network, Rahane offered insights into what made Shami such a challenging opponent in the nets and a valued member of India's dressing room.
"He was the most dangerous bowler to face in the nets, the way he used to bowl. Amazing seam position. Whenever there was a situation, he used to say he would win the match. This was his attitude always," Rahane said on Sony Sports Network.
Rahane emphasised Shami's commitment and competitive spirit throughout his career, noting how the pacer consistently delivered in crucial moments. The batter stressed that Shami's contributions extended beyond match performances and reflected his unwavering dedication to the team's success.
"Whether it's Tests or ODIs, he has bowled and won matches. He has gone through challenging times, but he has shown commitment and intent by coming to the ground. I would want to say that we were lucky that he was in our team," Rahane added.
Why did Rahane believe Shami deserved another Test opportunity?
Rahane believed Shami warranted further opportunities in Test cricket, particularly given his domestic performances and experience. The batter noted that Shami had returned to Ranji Trophy cricket and performed well, demonstrating his hunger to contribute at the highest level.
"I definitely feel so. He tried as well, especially in Test cricket, considering the way he was playing and bowling. An experienced player who has played so much went back to domestic cricket, gave his all, and did well," Rahane said.
Rahane expressed his hope that Shami would have received another chance to represent India in Test cricket, drawing a parallel to other senior players who had made comebacks. He acknowledged the challenges faced by experienced players and the value of their skill and experience in the team's setup.
"You cannot expect an experienced player to perform all the time. That's where experience comes in handy. I was hoping for him to get a chance, just like Bhuvi made a comeback," he noted.
"He has skill and magic in his hands. He was picking up wickets in the Ranji Trophy as well. I wanted to see him play Test cricket one more time because of the kind of effort he put in," he added.
