Innova Hycross completed a high altitude drive in under a day while the Urban Cruiser Hyryder achieved a separate record on one tank of petrol

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has secured two Asia Book of Records titles after the Innova Hycross and Urban Cruiser Hyryder completed a journey from West Bengal to Sikkim. The Innova Hycross attained an altitude of 4,310 metres in 22 hours 52 minutes meeting the 24-hour requirement for its record category. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder arrived at the same destination on a single tank of petrol.

The two vehicles use different petrol-electric hybrid systems. The Innova Hycross has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine coupled with Toyota’s fifth generation hybrid technology producing a combined power output of 183.7 hp. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder uses a smaller 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor generating around 114 hp. Both vehicles employ an electronically controlled automatic transmission but their engine capacities and electrical components differ.

The Innova Hycross received recognition for the maximum elevation gained by a car within 24 hours. The Hyryder secured a separate title for the highest elevation gained on one tank of fuel. The latter achievement concerns the ability to complete the specified ascent without refuelling – not a measured fuel-economy record. Both results were recognised by the Asia Book of Records following the respective driving challenges.

The journey began at Mandarmani in West Bengal, just two metres above sea level before ending at Nathula Pass in Sikkim at 4,310 metres. The vehicles encountered coastal roads, national highways and mountainous sections on their way to the Himalayan destination. The considerable altitude difference also meant changes in road gradients, temperatures and atmospheric conditions. The two record categories placed separate requirements on the vehicles despite their common destination.

The Innova Hycross Hybrid has an ARAI-certified fuel economy figure of 23.24 kmpl and a 52-litre petrol tank. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid returns a certified 27.97 kmpl and carries a 45-litre fuel tank. The Hyryder has the advantage in certified fuel efficiency but those laboratory figures do not establish the consumption recorded on the mountain journey. However, the actual distance travelled and petrol used on the record attempt have not been specified.

The petrol-electric systems can operate using the combustion engine, electric motor or a combination of both based on driving conditions. Regenerative braking recovers energy when the vehicle slows down and the petrol engine can also recharge the hybrid battery. Neither vehicle requires an external charging connection. The electric motors assist the petrol engines when required and the automatic hybrid systems manage the power sources without manual intervention from the driver.
