BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Shatters 500 Kmph Top Speed Barrier – World’s First

The electric hypercar records 503.17 kmph on a closed Abu Dhabi highway securing FIA recognition and two Guinness World Records
BYD had already established a 496.22 kmph speed record for the Yangwang U9 Xtreme in Germany in September 2025 but the electric hypercar has now crossed the 500 kmph barrier. Racing driver Marc Basseng clocked 503.17 kmph on a closed road in Abu Dhabi on November 1, 2026. The result made the U9 Xtreme the first production car to achieve the figure. The FIA recognised the run which surpassed the earlier attempt by 6.95 kmph.
Guinness World Records certified two categories for the achievement: the highest one-way speed by a production car and the corresponding record for an electric production car. The measurement was independently verified using a calibrated VBOX system. An FIA official examined the data and confirmed the result. However, the attempt did not establish a two-way average which is required under other production car speed record protocols.
The attempt took place on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi. Local authorities closed a 10 km section of the E11 highway and a 7 km uninterrupted straight was available for the high speed runs. The road was swept before the attempts and engineers inspected the surface for small wire fragments left by road-sweeping brushes. Basseng had previously driven the same hypercar at Germany’s ATP Papenburg proving ground.

The first two attempts on October 31 produced a maximum speed of 490 kmph. Engineers subsequently increased the rear wing angle to improve rear axle downforce, revised the suspension rebound calibration and adjusted tyre pressures. Battery and motor temperatures also received extra attention before the November 1 runs. The first attempt that day confirmed improvements in stability and tyre performance, and the second recorded the final 503.17 kmph figure.
The U9 Xtreme uses four independent electric motors rated at 555 kW each. Their combined output stands at 3,019 PS. Each motor can operate at speeds of up to 30,000 rpm. The hypercar also uses a 1,200 V electrical architecture instead of the 800 V system found in the standard U9. Its lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery supports extremely high discharge rates while the e4 torque vectoring system adjusts power independently at each wheel more than 100 times per second.

The active suspension is another essential component of the U9 Xtreme. Its DiSus-X system can generate up to 50 kN of vertical force in 120 milliseconds to control body movement. Giti developed specialised semi-slick tyres that use a dedicated compound and a treatment at the tyre rim interface to resist slippage under heavy acceleration or braking. Visually, the car features a low wedge-shaped nose, narrow lighting elements, a front splitter, an adjustable rear wing and a substantial rear diffuser.
The U9 Xtreme has also completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds. The car used the same technical specification as the record-breaking example. BYD plans to manufacture only 30 units worldwide. A production standard vehicle named Dawn Moment was displayed at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year and some customers have already approved their individual specifications. The manufacturer is now progressing towards contract signing and production scheduling for those vehicles.
