Inside iconic attar shops of Hyderabad, few even served Nizams

When modern city guides map out Hyderabad’s perfumery scene, the conversation almost always drifts toward the grand arches of Moazzam Jahi Market or the bustling shopping area of Abids.

Yet, the true gold mine of Deccani scent heritage lies further south along the stone arcades of Pathergatti and the sprawling lanes of the Charminar precinct. Here, tucked inside modest nooks lined with crystal decanters and brass balances, generations of perfumers continue to preserve the delicate art of attar-making, distilling precious botanicals, rare woods and spices into liquid history.

Siasat.com explores these historic attar shops spread in the older parts of the city, some of them having even served the royal families of Hyderabad.

Most iconic Attar shops in Hyderabad as of 2026

1. Nizam Attar

Established in 1840 near Mahboob Chowk, Nizam Attar remains one of the oldest and most revered fragrance houses in the Old City. Run by generations of the Ramzan Family, this modest shop specialises in slow-crafted, steam-distilled botanical attars and deep blends such as Pure Oud and Ruh Gulab. The store’s legacy is directly tied to its founder, Mohammad Ramzan, who served as a personal perfumer to the sixth Nizam, Mahboob Ali Khan, formulating bespoke blends tailored exclusively for the royal court.

2. Purandas Ranchhoddas

Just like Nizam Attar, this perfume shop also traces its family lineage back to the 1800s, solidifying its prominent presence near Gulzar Houz in the early 20th Century. Purandas Ranchhoddas is synonymous with traditional Indian perfumery. The establishment is famous for complex natural extractions and legendary house blends such as Pahadi Phool, Shah Jahan, Naushad and Hara Gulab. Its historical status was formally sealed around 1920 when it became an authorised attar supplier to the Nizam’s court, catering to the nobility and high society of princely Hyderabad.

3. Famous Perfumery Centre

Located near Machili Kaman along Pathergatti Road, Famous Perfumery Centre was founded around 1950 and represents over seven decades of mastery in scent formulation. Renowned as a pioneer in custom blending, the house balances traditional floral and oriental notes with an exceptional ability to recreate fine fragrance profiles for modern wearers. While established during the transition period following the princely state’s integration, its secret formulas draw heavily from the aristocratic Nawabi perfumery traditions of Lucknow and old Hyderabad.

4. Hyderabad Perfumers

Established in 1970 on the bustling Pathergatti Main Road, Hyderabad Perfumers stands as a celebrated pillar of the post-princely era in Old City trade. Rooted in multi-generational family craftsmanship, the house specialises in non-alcoholic botanical blends and rich traditional extractions like Ruh Gulab, Shamama, and delicate Jasmine. Though founded after the reign of the Nizams, its artisans draw directly upon classic Deccani olfactory techniques.
