GaadiWaadi -
New compact SUVs from VW, Renault and Mahindra will join the next-gen Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon along with updated Maruti Suzuki Fronx and a small Hyundai EV within the next 12 months
The compact SUV class will receive several major additions over the next 12 months in India. Volkswagen and Renault are planning new nameplates while Mahindra will convert the Vision S concept into a production SUV, and Kia and Tata Motors will introduce new generations of their established models. Hyundai, meanwhile, also has a small electric SUV arriving soon and the Maruti Suzuki Fronx facelift is under development.
1. Maruti Suzuki Fronx Facelift

Maruti Suzuki has started road tests of the updated Fronx ahead of its debut in early 2027. Photographs of the camouflaged vehicle reveal a revised grille and rear disc brakes. An element positioned in the centre of the grille resembles an ADAS sensor which suggests that the global update could be heading to India. It may also get the Z12E petrol mill with MT and AMT CNG options. The brand is also working on multiple alternative fuel based models.
2. Next Generation Kia Sonet

Kia’s second-gen Sonet is expected to enter the Indian market in 2027 judging by the recent test mule sightings but no confirmation has been made yet. The replacement could utilise the K1 platform and deliver more room for rear passengers addressing one of the limitations associated with the current compact SUV. Larger digital displays and a redesigned dashboard could give the cabin a substantial upgrade. While no performance changes are likely, a more advanced Level 2 ADAS suite is a possibility.

3. Next Generation Tata Nexon

Tata Motors reportedly assigned the Garud codename to the next-gen Nexon which is expected to reach showrooms in mid-2027. The current model first entered the market in 2017 and received extensive revisions in 2020 and 2023. A heavily modified version of Tata’s X1 architecture could underpin the SUV. Major structural revisions, a redesigned exterior and an entirely different cabin are expected. The existing petrol and diesel choices could continue with manual and automatic transmissions.
4. Mahindra Vision S Production SUV

Mahindra previewed its future compact SUV through the Vision S concept. The road-going model is expected in early 2027 and should retain the concept’s upright stance, squared wheel arches and overall proportions. Its appearance could create sufficient separation from the XUV 3XO despite both products occupying the sub-four-metre category but it will slot above it taking on Kia Syros, Hyundai Bayon and others. It will become the first model to use NU_IQ monocoque architecture.

5. Renault Bridger

A few months ago, Renault’s Bridger concept previewed a sub-four-metre SUV scheduled to enter production before the end of 2027. The company plans to launch the model in India first and manufacture it at its Chennai facility for domestic sales and exports. It will occupy the space between the Kiger and Duster and Renault’s R-GMP architecture will underpin the five-seater. On a broader perspective, petrol, hybrid and electric derivatives have received confirmation already.
6. Hyundai HE1i Compact Electric SUV

Hyundai has been testing a small electric SUV under the HE1i codename and the prototypes point to a tall roof, compact footprint and boxy shaped profile intended for Indian road conditions. It could carry the Ioniq P name and it will carry high local sourcing down the line. It will be available with two battery packs with the claimed range going over 450 km. It will go on sale within the next three months.
7. Volkswagen New Compact SUV

Local manufacturing will play a central role in the project as Volkswagen targets one of India’s largest passenger vehicle categories. The MQB-A0-IN architecture will underpin the SUV and create technical links to other locally manufactured Volkswagen Group products and it will be positioned below the Taigun. Reports have connected it to the Tera name and it will be sold with a 1.0L turbo petrol mill.
