Tata Kuno Midsize EV Under Development, Launch In 2027-28 – Report

Tata Kuno EV could measure around 4.3 metres and use the Acti.ev architecture; will be positioned between Nexon EV and Sierra EV
Tata Motors has constantly been linked with a proper midsize SUV even before the arrival of the Harrier. Considering the popularity of midsize SUVs in ICE and electric versions now, it is no brainer that the homegrown manufacturer would make a move and the first signs have appeared on the internet. According to a recent report, Tata is finally all set to join the fray with a brand new model and utilise familiar underpinnings.
Kuno is the internal codename for the new electric SUV which is expected to reach showrooms during 2027-28. At around 4.3 metres long, the forthcoming model could occupy the space between the next-gen Nexon EV and Sierra EV. The report further notes that it could target one of India’s best-selling passenger EV, the MG Windsor EV.
Production plans add another interesting element to the project. Sanand in Gujarat could handle manufacturing reportedly and its annual capacity stands at around 80,000 to 1 lakh units. It must be noted that Tata Motors already has an ambitious electric vehicle roadmap for the rest of the decade and its Investor Day presentation earlier this year stands in testament.

Tata outlined a plan to increase its EV range from six models to 10 by FY2031. The Kuno would become one of the products that fills the gaps between Tata current electric offerings as that plan progresses. We already know that the Safari EV and Avinya are stepping. The Acti.ev architecture will sit underneath the new SUV as Tata designed the electric platform to support multiple drive configurations.
It can give rise to EVs with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive applications. Its battery placement also helps free up cabin floor space – an important factor for a 4.3-metre model which will be pitched against the Windsor EV. Tata already offers a range of electric powertrain components across the Curvv EV and Sierra EV. The Curvv EV uses a 55 kWh battery and a 167 hp front-mounted e-motor producing 215 Nm.

The Sierra EV, on the other hand, moves into larger 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery capacities and offers both single e-motor and dual e-motor configurations. Its power outputs stretch from 209 hp to a combined 349 hp depending on the version. The Curvv EV carries a claimed figure of 502 km and Sierra EV’s variants reach up to 535 km or 665 km based on battery capacity.
Expect the claimed driving range to be well over 450 km on a single charge in its high-spec trims while the interior will be packed with features such as a large touchscreen unit, a fully-digital instrument console, Level 2 ADAS, panoramic sunroof and more.
