Maruti Suzuki to launch its first pure electric people mover in quick succession after the e Vitara, challenging the Kia Carens Clavis EV

Not long after introducing the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki has started development of its second electric car, which will be an MPV. The company is likely to unveil it at the biennial Auto Expo, set to be held in February 2027. During Maruti Suzuki’s Q2 FY2027 earnings conference call, Chief Investor Relations Officer Rahul Bharti revealed that the company plans to launch its next EV at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2027.

In all likelihood, he was referring to the aforementioned electric MPV Codenamed ‘Maruti YMC’, the electric MPV is being tested on public roads since summer this year. Recently, Instagram user carlord_767 spotted one of the several prototypes of the Maruti YMC undergoing tests on the road. A spy video shared by the spotter has shown several details of the model’s exterior.

At the rear, we can see the Maruti YMC featuring Maruti Ertiga-like vertical LED tail lights. The tail lights are connected via a horizontal strip, although we doubt it is illuminated. An LED high-mounted stop lamp and a shark-fin antenna can also be seen.

The side profile has a boxy appearance but leans more toward SUV than MPV. The beltline is set quite high, leading to a sleek look for the greenhouse. These attributes, as well as the angular, squared-off wheel arches, make the Maruti YMC reminiscent of the Maruti e Vitara from the sides. 18-inch alloy wheels will likely be part of the standard equipment.

Previous sightings have indicated that the front end of the Maruti YMC will likely also have hints of the Maruti e Vitara. Here, too, the car will look more SUV than an MPV. The bonnet should be set high and have a largely flattish design. The headlamps should be horizontal but have vertical extensions. The nose section is likely to be covered with a body-coloured surface.

Maruti Suzuki will likely offer the YMC in seven- and six-seat versions, with the latter featuring captain’s chairs in the second row. We expect two power-electric variants, both with a single motor powering the front wheels. The base variant’s motor should produce 105.8 kW (142 hp) and 193 Nm of torque, and the top variant’s motor will likely develop 128 kW (172 hp) and 193 Nm of torque. The former will likely draw power from a 48.8 kWh LFP battery pack, and the latter should draw power from a 61.1 kWh LFP unit. We expect the top variant to have a range of approximately 525 kilometres.
